The Mexfiles has never expected to turn a profit, but personal funds only go so far. Miscellaneous expenses (telephone, internet connection, subscriptions, spyware, hardware repair, etc.) run about 600 pesos (35 US$) a month, and donations are gratefully accepted. What about the Caravan! How will you lead in protecting their safety from our armed forces?
One of the things I find interesting about the caravan is how many of those folks have spurned Mexico’s offers of asylum. Mexico is a place where such migrants already speak the language, where there’s certainly greater cultural continuity with the origin countries, and a place where such folks could more easily fit in. Yet they continue on to an openly-hostile USA where they risk separation from their children, indefinite detention until their asylum (or other) cases are heard, and continued hardship by further travels.
Of course in Mexico there are fewer freebies on hand. Still…
