Sneaky political advertising

6 February 2012

One of the better things about Mexico is that political campaigning is tightly controlled, and the candidates can’t start bombarding the helpless citizenry with ads until 90 days before the election.  Which doesn’t mean they don’t try to put their best foot forward before they go toe to toe with the opposition.

The main reason Televisa (allegedly) began pushing Enrique Peña Nieto so heavily is because of the restrictions on advertising, which were ushered in with the political reforms of 2007 – and wiped out millions in radio and TV revenue every election cycle. Perhaps it’s just coincidence, but Peña Nieto seemed to become a lot better known shortly thereafter.
