New drug law takes effect
With publication in the Diario Oficial de la Federación today, a new law takes effect that will have a huge impact on drug use in this country. Ninety days from today, it will require a prescription to buy antibiotics.
What did you think I meant?

Dr. Simi of Similares will give you a scrip for 20 pesos. There is a consultation office beside most Similares farmacias where you can be “examined” and issued a prescription adding only 20 pesos to the price of your antibiotic.
I wonder how much US drug companies paid for that one. OTC anti-bacterial products cause far more resistance.
Having used Dr. Simi, I don’t put examined in quote marks. The doctors do the same examination they’d do in their offices, and don’t feel obligated to push the company product. “Doc in the box” clinics are perfectly acceptable (and Dr. Simi isn’t the only farmacia chain to offer them) but foreigners often don’t understand that Mexican doctors expect the patient to keep their own medical records, and take an active role in their own treatment, sometimes giving the impression of superficial examinations (or, seeking a superficial examination and being obliged by the doctor).
