Never let a disaster… the Interocean corridor

26 August 2023

One thing leads to another…. a small story from AFP on the Panama Canal and the water crisis which is seriously disrupting its operations.

Way down, in the 11th of 12 paragraphs with no explanation it reads “Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, also referred this week to the “special” situation facing the waterway.” Apparently in response to a quote from the Panamanian president.

Maybe there are other quotes by other regional leaders, but given the lack of context, no explanation as to why the quote from AMLO was even brought up. Although, either Raw Story or AFP missed something important.

While the ambitious CIIT (Corredor Interoceánico del Istmo de Tehuantepec) include several billion US dollars in developing “poles” . . . industrial centers and developments with incentives and tax breaks for investors along the route . . . While there isn’t any word on the exact inaguaration date, it was scheduled for this month, though some inevitable delays, pushed back at least a month, but we are told, definitely before 2024.

While the timing of CIIT seems perfect, it is not without controversy.
