Now do they get it?

22 April 2008

The “Great Wall of Texas… New Mexico… Arizona… California” is such a stupid idea on so many levels, it’s hard to say where to begin. Sane people — everyone from local Chambers of Commerce to nuns to ranchers to snowbirds — had been doing their best to politely explain that people living near the border are United States citizens too, with the same rights and expectations as those near… say… the Canadian border, but it took bureaucratic bulldozing by Homeland Security to finally wake up the rest of the country, as Greg Harman writes in the San Antonio Current:

By utilizing a provision tucked inside the federal Real ID Act, [Homeland Security Secretary Michael] Chertoff announced he will ignore 36 federal laws — from Safe Drinking Water and Clean Air acts to Native American Graves Protection — to expedite the construction of 360 miles of border fence he wants to complete by year’s end.

The shock of this so-called “mega-waiver” has been an invaluable windfall for the resistance.

The Sierra Club and Defenders of Wildlife, defeated in attempts to stop the barrier from slicing through the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, are now petitioning the Supremes to consider the constitutionality of the 2005 Real ID clause allowing Chertoff to sidestep any federal law “necessary to ensure expeditious construction of the barriers and roads.” An amicus brief submitted by 14 members of Congress in support of that request garnered national headlines and increased the petition’s political weight.

Two more amicus briefs are expected to be filed this week before tomorrow’s deadline, one from an assortment of constitutional and administrative law professors and another, being drafted by Bear, from almost everybody else.
Bear’s list includes an assortment of national and international environmental groups, historic preservation and archeological societies, the Tohono O’odham Nation, and the United Church of Christ.

“We’ve had everybody from the Nature Conservancy to Greenpeace to the Little Sisters of the Good Shepard express interest – a very wide variety of people because of the breadth of the waiver — the fact that he waived the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”

I don’t understand how the Republican Regime that is in power with Dictator Dick and W with all their cronies can continue to disregard all the laws of the United States to satisfy their agenda. But worse, I don’t understand how and why the “American People” remain inactive, compliant and complacent to what Dictator Dick, W, and Chertoff are doing. All the people who are directly affected by Chertoff ignoring those laws should take any and all appropriate legal action immediately. Why isn’t Chertoff being prosicuted for ignoring those laws. If Average Joe did something illegal, there is no doubt that he would be sent to jail and prosicuted. What’s the use of having those laws in place if Chertoff is going to blatanly ignore them?

The blantant disregard for our laws and our contry, as shown specifically by Chertoff, but by others also in the current Republican Regime baffles me. No wonder the majority of the world thinks we’re stupid and they hate the United States.

The blame should be for those that violated our immigration laws. The illegal immigrants are the cause for the fence being built. Our government has been slow at getting the fence up and more and more citizens are asking why it’s taking so damn long to get the thing up. If those that do not recognize the Rio Grande as an official border, maybe a large wall or fence will be more recognizable. No, it will not stop all illegal immigration, but it will slow it down. If it reduces the uncontrolled flow by50%, it is well worth it.

Socialism, poor immigration policy, economic illiteracy (dey took er jobs), class warfare, and racism are the cause for all of the illegal immigration scare. Every group that has entered the country whether it be the Chinese (the Chinese Exclusion Act), the Irish (racism, and anti catholic fear), Germans (prohibitionistsm, and anti german fears), Italians (organized crime, racism, and anti catholic fears), and every other group that now defines who and what America is has had to go through this BS.

Immigration laws have made it expensive and difficult for people to enter legally. Socialism has been used as a fuel to anger Americans who know that money is being spent on non-citizens, class warfare has been used by labor unions to prevent cheaper foriegn workers from entering the country, and economic illiteracy seems to not understand that lower wages will mean lower prices for products as well. Reason, common sense, and rationality don’t win elections.

If you remember, Bush favored a guest worker program that would have made it easier to hire mexican labor and legal, but nativists opposed this idea. There is too much political pressure in America against an open border. Bush was forced into this, he had no choice. He tried amnesty and it failed bad.

I as a Reason Magazine reading Libertarian frequently take on Ron Paul supporters stance on illegal immigration here:
