Washing their hands in Washington

18 July 2008

From James McKinney of the New York Times comes this backgrounder on the latest irritant between the United States and Mexico (and the civilized world):

HOUSTON — Despite pleas from the White House and the State Department, as well as an international court order to review their cases, Texas will execute five Mexicans on death row, a spokeswoman for the governor said Thursday….

The decision by Gov. Rick Perry to allow the executions is the latest twist in a long-running battle between Mexico, which has no death penalty, and the United States …

On Wednesday, the International Court of Justice at The Hague ordered a review of five of the Texas cases after Mexico complained that the convicts, all men, had not been allowed a chance to talk to a Mexican consul after their arrests, as required under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

But that argument holds little sway in Texas, a place with a long history of upholding the death penalty and of telling other governments to mind their own business.

“This ruling doesn’t change anything,” said Mr. Perry’s spokeswoman, Allison Castle. …

Not that I have much sympathy for Roberto Moreno Ramos, César Roberto Fierro, Rubén Ramírez or Alberto Real García, but the willingness of the powerful United States Federal government to give into the whims of the state of Texas reminded me of another time local prejudices were given precedence over international legal standards:

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!

All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”

(Matthew 27:24-25)

What a wonderful religion! A religion that celebrates the death penalty on a daily basis and at one point in time supported the rise of Adolph Hitler. They are also the same religion that worships a dead Jew who was his own father who managed to be born from some woman that he never even had sex with, so that he could kill himself to forgive you for the sin that he created in the first place!

The Vatacan is such a great place, they have never executed anybody right? They have never supported the death penalty?

Why do Mexicans protest the fence, and then protest when the state of Texas decides to treat them as their own? Isn’t that what Mexicans want when they come to the US? To be Americans? Why should the Federal government give into the state of Texas?

Because the federal government’s job is to allow states to govern themselves and not to govern the states. (this would mean that they have to leave California’s legal canibis programs alone, and only stop states when they violate the constitution.)

Mexican superiority would suggest that the people who leave Mexico for the US do it because they are traitors to Mexico. This doesn’t really happen though. What does happen is a bunch of whining by White Mexicans that the border wall isn’t fair to the poor Mestizos that somehow can’t find a decent job in Mexico. Mexico should be embarrassed by this, are they? No. Do they even desire to emulate the US? No, they would rather chase down any illegal immigrants from Guatamala and Nicuragua that might show up. What a bunch of hipocracy.
