Another Eagle Warrior….

20 July 2008

Even if he can’t sing “Guadalajara” (or at any rate, shouldn’t), he probably deserves the honor:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico has awarded Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy the country’s highest honor for his work defending the rights of immigrants during his decades in Congress.

The Mexican government said in its official gazette it presented the “Aztec Eagle” honor to Kennedy in Washington on Friday.

“He has denounced injustices suffered by immigrants,” and “promoted initiatives to promote full political participation and increased access to health and education services for the Mexican-American community,” the official announcement said.

The veteran Massachusetts senator fought for an immigration reform bill in Congress that failed to pass last year.

Mexicans, and Latin Americans in general, have a soft spot for those that try, but are defeated. Although Bill Gates is also a recipient of the Order of the Aztec Eagle, it is normally it is reserved for heads of state (Eduard Benes of Czechoslovakia, Queen Margaret of Denmark, Lulu Ignacio de Silva of Brazil, etc.) though it can be awarded to military officers (Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1950) and parliamentary leaders (like Kennedy).

Right wingers, of course, are whining about the award.

Mexican politicians should be embarrassed by this. Why is it that they allow Mexico to errode so bad that people must risk life and limb to get to the United States of America? Why do Mexican Politicians not emulate the Capitalist drive of the US? Why do they chase down illegal immigrants in Mexico, who not only speak Spanish but share a common heritage derived from Spain? When Mexico opens their southern border and reforms their stupid immigration laws, only then can they bitch and complain about the United States of America’s laws.

Those laws to seal the Mexican southern border were pushed by the USA. We used to welcome migrants. Yes, we could have been more gracious about it but in general we did welcome migrants, like the thousands of Guatemalans who fled from the war.

Mexican politicians? There’s a Spanish kid handling internal affairs. Fox’s parents weren’t Mexican . Practically the whole generation of current leaders is USA-educated and/or Spain raised. Who are they working for?
And they could harldy be more capitalistic. Thing is that capital doesn’t have a homeland and they don’t give a damn about this country.

I’m gonna bitch and complain about every freaking law that goes against human dignity, be it Mexican, American, European, etc. You yourself complain and bitch without asking for permission, don’t you?

I certainly want a more rational and humane approach to my country’s development. No, I don’t like seeing broken homes with barely educated people where half the family is in the USA and the other half is about to go. Yes, I’m doing something about it. Very little, but as much as I can do.

Has anyone in the US Senate fought longer and harder for the rights of immigrants than Edward Kennedy? When all the other Dems were too afraid. too politically timid, there was Edward Kennedy, fighting for the right of the poor, undocumented, immigrant laborer to be treated like a human being.
