Anchor (babies) away

22 August 2008

I’m almost willing to bet there are going to be “MEXICAN POLICE INVADE LAREDO” stories in your favorite right-wing wingnut sources about this.

An American citizen went into labor while on a park bench in Nuevo Laredo.  Police officers, doing what police officers are supposed to do, transport the person in distress (soon to be two people) to the hospital.  Where the American insisted she did not want the baby born in Mexico.  So… the officers loaded her up and raced her across the International Bridge to a Laredo hospital.  And were arrested for illegal entry and carrying firearms.  And deported.

Geeze, I know Homeland Security has its bureaucratic quotas and all… but couldn’t they have asked these guys to “voluntarily depart” the country and maybe made the embarrassing stats on operation “Scheduled Departure” might not have been quite so ludicrous.

I’m waiting for the trolls to hit the site.

In all fairness though, and I honestly meant to include this, were the situation reversed, Laredo officers would have been treated in the same manner.

The law is the same on both sides of the border. That needs to be changed in the spirit of international cooperation

Yeah, but with the wonders of U.S. bureaucratic technology, those NL cops probably will be denied entry to visit their relatives and shop at WalMart on lel otro lado for the next ten years. Th.e Mexican bureaucrats would figure out some way to lose the paperwork for Laredo cops coming in to visit grandma… or Boys’ Town.

The dumbest part is: Why didn’t she want the baby born in Mexico? It would have had two very useful citizenships. She probably thought the kid wouldn’t have gotten automatic U.S. citizenship, which was incorrect. Note to very pregnant women traveling abroad: The U.S. will give your offspring citizenship if you are a citizen traveling abroad and you give birth. You do not need to run home when you go into labor. (That’s why I have U.S. citizenship after being born in Canada.)

Given the way everybody is so jumpy about citizenship these days, the poor mom was probably not thinking clearly… giving birth is kinda inconceivable to us guys.

Seems like CBP are on a quota for refusals & denials right now. Pharr, in Texas, seems to be on a ‘No Limeys or Mennonites Allowed’ thing…
