¡No mames, güey!

20 October 2009

According to polling firm Consulta Mitofsky, Mexican adults curse an average of 20 times a day, serving up about 1.3 billion swear words daily.

The survey, reported this week by AP, also found that upper class citizens swear more than the poor, while people in the heavily Indian southern part of the country curse less than northerners.

Fuckin’ Laura Martinez … that cabrona finds the best shit on the damn internet.

    Yeah, but it’s not swearing.

When I moved from BsAs Argentina (ranks alongside Mexico for palabrotes) to provincial Peru my normal, conversational language shocked people to the point where their mouths would drop open. I had top change speaking habits….. and fast.

The benchmark should be “using offensive language” and not “swearing”. The words used by Mexicans for Mexicans in Mexico are very unlikely to be offensive the vast majority of times.

(By the way, for those among you reading that don’t speak the language, Spanish swearing is far more inventive and elegant than the normal tripe served up in Anglosajon).

Like that scene in the Border Patrol office in “El Norte” where the Guatemalan avoids return to Guatemala by cursing like a Mexican? I can’t stand swearing in American English, but there is something about the folksy and creative usage of Mexican “impolite” language I find endearing.

Of course there are the normal mix-ups … like when I asked the woman from New Mexico living in LA to pass the plate of donuts. Roscos. Turns out that in her town I was asking for a vagina. Her husband, a Cuban, quickly stepped in and stopped her from slapping me. Then there was my Cuban buddy that asked a lady to go to the next room and “get” her daughter. Cojer. That was an ugly moment.

When I was learning Spanish on the street in LA I was once told by an old man that if I wanted to talk to God I needed to know Spanish because that is what God speaks. He then added very quickly that God is not Mexican. Arriba Mexico, hijos de la chingada. 🙂

    ¿Qué coño dices? ¡Hijo de puta! ¡Concha de tu madre! ¡Qué bolas! ¡Qué mierda!…jajajajajajaja…

Actually, I see more in common with Anglo-Saxon (and most of our cusswords come down from that era almost totally unaltered, which isn’t bad) than one thinks…the words used are the same, at the root of things. Body functions, body parts where the sun don’t shine, sex, mother, and religion (or any combination or permutation thereof…eg. goddamned motherfucking shit!)

No hay nada de nuevo, carajo.
