First of all, his name is Jorge Castañeda Gutman. And, he is about as much a Mexican as Santiago Creel. Whom are we kidding? El Mexicano es muy noble, pero no vive en Polanco o Lomas.

You’ll get no argument from me that he is far out of the mainstream in Mexican intellectual thought (and in Mexico generally), but he (and Enrique Krauze) are the names most English-language readers with a casual interest in Mexican affairs are familiar with.

Not sure what difference the apellido materno makes since his books and articles in English (which is the language most visitors to the site read most easily) are published under only the paternal name. I also leave “Gutman” out because I have run across critiques of his work that degenerated into anti-Semetic screeds, suggesting that a Germanic family name makes one a Jew, and somehow unfit to discuss Mexican issues.

The guy may be a muddle-headed dolt, and more gringo than the gringos, but he just as much a Mexican as José Woldenberg Karakowsky, Elena Poniatowska Amor, Joaquin Hendrix Díaz, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, Frida Kahlo Calderón, Juan Osorio Chong…
