Is that an axolotl in your pocket, or are you glad to see me?
It must be non-mammalian vertebrate day here at Mex Files. In addition to the news on the rescue of various reptiles and fish, wishes for the speedy recovery of a caracara, comes the first glimpse of the new 50 peso bill… honoring Xochimilco and everyone’s favorite evolutionary link, Ambystoma mexicanum, the real life “Far Side” cartoon animal.
Oh my God! I’m going to have to stop making my favorite joke about the current 50 peso note. “How can you not love a country that issues pink currency printed with butterflies?”
Somehow that swamp creature just isn’t as much fun as the Monarchs of Michoacán. And I suspect some Mexicans may well agree.

Where dull green currency is getting a bit tired.
My daughter has a pair of these axolotls.
Perfect pets–they do nothing except eat and float quietly.
Can’t argue with that!
