NAFTA: some are more equal than others
Beginning on March 1, Canadian and U.S. citizens who enter Mexico via air must show a valid passport or passport card, Mexican officials said Tuesday.
…
Mexicans wishing to enter the United States — even just to make a connecting flight — must apply for a visa by making a premium-rate phone call to schedule an interview and paying 131 dollars, regardless if the visa is approved. Even if it is issued, a visa does not guarantee entrance to the country, according to the U.S. Embassy website.

This stupid rule is really hurtin the US Airlines. Everybody I know tries to stay away from them if they can.
is this for real? i can’t find the statement on State or embassy web sites, am wondering if The News simply made it up.
Very real. Why do you think there’s a huge line snaking around the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City every morning?
The college kid in our shop in Mazatlan — going to see his girlfriend in Canada — found it cheaper to fly to Montreal via Air Canada, rather than from one of the discount airlines here, given that he’d otherwise have to go to Mexico City for an interview (and rack up that huge “fee”) anyway.
