Dogs and cats together. Argentines and Brits agree!

19 March 2014

Sombrero tip to Inca Kola News:

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and British Prime Minister David Cameron have both strongly condemned the Crimean referendum as an  illegitimate exercise,  held as it was while there were Russian troops on the ground.

imagesI’ll accept that, but  if 21,000 Russian soldiers at the time of the referendum, or one per ever 100 citizens is the rationale for disregarding the vote, then what can one say about last year’s poll of the residents of the Malvinas conducted under the gaze of  1200- 1500 British military personnel stationed on the islands… which, with a population of just under 3000 people, works out to one soldier per every two to two and a half inhabitants?

Russia needs to implement a Russian form of the Monroe Doctrine, which the U.S. has allowed the British to violate by their presence in the Malvinas……..

The Malvinas part of the equation is only about Argentinean nationalism and President Kirchner “waving the nationalist flag.” Her government is in very serious economic trouble. And it is becoming increasingly authoritarian, increasingly trying to suppress press freedom amongst other things. I do not think she deserves your support Richard. I would say it’s more a case of apples and oranges than dogs and cats.

The Fernandez Kirchner government has plenty of flaws but if breaking the Groupo Clarín media monopoly is “suppressing press freedom”, then we need more suppression of press freedom in Latin America. The government certainly has its own motivations for the media law, but it’s potentially one of their biggest achievements.

And there has hardly been much new rhetoric about the Malvinas despite the devaluation of the peso in the first two months of this year, so I’m not sure the cliches work right now.
